The coveted title of 'inventor of Pantyhose' goes to Allen Grant Senior, of Glen Raven Mill, California, in 1959. The inspired idea behind 'pantyhose' was a combination of 'panties', the American term for knickers, and 'hose', referring to hosiery, i.e. stockings. Grant produced these items, which were sewn together, with an opaque nylon top section doubling as knickers, thus eliminating the need to wear additional undergarments. By 1965, the production had been perfected and the garments were now literally 'seamless'. Coincidently, the swinging 60's saw the rise, literally, of the mini-skirt. Women could now wear very short skirts, without the worry of showing off their stocking tops or garter belts. The terms 'Pantyhose' and 'tights' are an Anglo-American point of contention.

In the UK the term 'tights' is used to refer to all 'tights'! A garment that covers your legs from the waist down, encompassing your feet (although recently there has been a renaissance of 'footless tights' for peep hole toe sandals). All tights are not created equal though and, as such, are classified and separated by 'denier'. Denier refers to the thickness of the material, i.e. 10 denier would be light, sheer, see through, whereas 70 denier, would be opaque, thicker and more suitable for winter wear and when one is required to keep warm. The term 'tights' stretches to include even children's woolly tights! In America, 'Pantyhose' refers to what in the UK would be classed as lighter denier, usually up to 40 denier, sheer, transparent tights. Either sheer to waist or often with a opaque knicker-like section at the top. They usually come in natural or nude shades, which means that your legs can look tanned all year round. Pantyhose or sheer tights are often seen as ideal formal work wear. They can compliment any outfit and create the appearance of a more professional finish. In the 90's in particular, Pantyhose or sheer black tights were very popular office wear. Pantyhose and sheer tights can however be extremely susceptible to rips, due to the delicateness of the material.

A handy tip for these 'ladders' (UK) or 'runs' (USA), is to apply some clear nail varnish to stop the ladder spreading further! Americans use the term 'tights' to refer to anything of a heavier material which can also be patterned, or woollen. Tights and Pantyhose are mostly manufactured from nylon or cotton, Lycra is normally included in modern blends to improve fit and comfort. The growth of the industry and the technological developments mean that tights (used in its the generic form) are no longer just to cover your legs, there are now tights that hold you in, hold you up, shape your body, eliminate VPL (visible panty line), that are footless, crotchless, controlling, ribbed and even tights that are caffeinated to reduce cellulite! As fashion dictates, tights now come in every colour and pattern imaginable. Tights have been developed to be tailored to all stages of your life, there are maternity tights, bridal tights, fishnet tights and even glittery tights!

During pregnancy, comfort is a major priority. Most expectant mothers like to look good as well. The majority of women do not begin to show until they are at least four months along, so you may be able to use your non-maternity wardrobe until then. After four months, however, you will need maternity tops. Baby doll tops and wrap around tops are both functional and fashionable.

Fabrics that stretch and breath are the best to buy. Also make sure you buy tops that absorb moisture as this will help keep you cool during the sweltering months of summer. If you buy a top that irritates you, this can cause itching in the abdominal area and this in turn can lead to pregnancy marks that you do not want.

Baby doll tops are the perfect way to cover your growing waistline without sacrificing style or comfort. With the extensive variety of styles and colors, you can find the perfect match for jeans, slacks or skirts. There are long sleeved and sleeveless versions, as well as every length in between, that are suitable for each season's weather. Baby doll tops usually have an empire waist that seems to float along the frame and adds the illusion of length and slimness to the torso area. It is a fashionable choice that beautifully highlights and flatters the entire frame.

Wrap tops are great for the plus size woman. They are very figure flattering, comfortable and stylish. These tops can be worn during pregnancy and afterwards. Plain colors are more flattering than a top with a complex design. Patterns and designs tend to make one look larger. Cotton blend is the most comfortable fabric as it is nice and airy in the hot summertime. A wrap with an adjustable tie is great when you are pregnant as you can adjust out as the baby grows. You can adjust the tie to be smaller after the baby is born. These tops are appropriate for all occasions such as work or a night out on the town with friends. The wrap top, as the wrap dress is very popular and a must for your wardrobe.

Do not forget the seasons once you start building your maternity wardrobe. If you are pregnant in winter and the winters in your town are very cold, buy yourself turtlenecks that are comfortable but not clingy. Look for one in a dark gray color or black. Once the thermometer starts to rise and the sun is burning brightly in the sky, make sure you have some tee shirts to keep you as cool and breezy as possible. If you like tank tops then purchase ones with wider shoulder straps as the thinner straps are likely to dig into your skin and bother you, as you get bigger.

Can you imagine a time where women live in a world of fashion devoid of stockings, tights, or pantyhose. Granted this wasn't always issue, but there was a time when the tights and stockings were far from the comfortable, form fitting, versatile ones we can go out and buy today. Stockings have endured a long and strange life that began over 400 years ago in Europe. Here are some interesting and fun facts about stockings that you may not know.

Men in tights. That's right, it was men who first coveted this leg hugging fashion. Somewhere around the mid 1500's stockings were knitted from materials like wool, silk, and cotton and were mainly worn by our male counterparts while women still were a little out of the loop.

Women did begin to wear panty hose eventually but for a long period of time silk tights remained something that only well to do women were able to afford and wear.

The major movement in the history of stocking, at least in women's fashion, began as the hem lines of dresses lifted from basically the floor to the ankle. Once women began to show more skin stocking began to become more popular.

Even though women in the early 1900's did wear stockings, it was seldom as a fashion statement. Instead, women's stockings were worn much like we wear bras and panties, that is, they were only worn as part of an extensive undergarment set.

In the 1930 and 1940's when the political and social climate of the world began to change, not always for the best, the hem line seemed to get hirer and higher. This is probably the reason why by 1930's tights were become a wardrobe staple for many women.

The being era of stocking for women marked a time when there were more sizes that just the A B C's that we find in our department stores. Stockings were made from materials that were not as elastic as the nylon we have nowadays. This meant that stocking were often, baggy, didn't fit right, needed to be held up, and came in a variety of sizes. This is also why there are seams down the back of the leg.

Stocking were mainly made from silk or rayon, which is actually artificial silk, this made stockings expensive leaving women with only a few pairs. Since they were not as easily obtained as they are today, many women were forced to "darn" or sew their stocking when they were damaged or ripped.

During World War II tights were expensive and the material was rare (many materials used to make tights were used for military purposes) Since the hemline was around the knee about this time, many women felt they needed to have panty hose to complete their outfit. What did they do? Women who couldn't afford or find pantyhose would use eye liner to draw a line up the back of their legs that would resemble the seam found on stockings.

Think that the ever increasing popularity of tights with designs and prints on them is something new? Think again. Women during the 1940's often painted different themes and motifs on their tights to personalize them.

Sckoon is a new clothing company which has created a huge buzz with its' range of organic clothing - so what are the benefits of buying organic cotton clothes..?

There are two main thrusts to the Sckoon company sales message - the first is that the products are all Fair Trade produced.

This means that instead of the workers just being paid low wages, the profits are *obliged* to go back into local community projects, meaning long term benefits.

This obligation must be met in order to call your products Fair Trade.

The company currently produces in India, Egypt and Japan.

The second selling point is that the clothing is 100% organic cotton.

This means it is grown without chemicals, picked and spun by hand, and either undyed, or only dyed with ecologically friendly dyes.

As a result of this, not only can you feel good because you are helping the poorer communities of the world, you have the natural benefits of organic cotton.

Organic cotton feels great, it feels fresh, and it smells fresh.

It is smoother to the skin, and repeated washing makes it feel *more* smooth, not less, which is what happens to processed mixed cottons.

It's easy to care for, as long as you don't wash it in too high a temperature you can pretty much just wash it all together!

Baby clothes are proving a big success in organic cotton, because of the softness against the babies skin, and to keep up with the environment friendly message, you can get organic cotton diapers, to wash and re-use instead of the disposable ones.

So you can see there are many benefits of buying organic cotton Sckoon clothing, and the company is aiming to mix help to the workers with help to the planet with excellent quality to the customer.

Ballet Dancewear

Many companies manufacture dance wear, costumes and fleece warm up clothing for professional ballet dancers and students of ballet. Ballet dancers usually wear either tights or leotards for comfortable body maneuver. The tights worn depend on the type of slippers that the dancer wears. They can be footed with an elastic strap at the foot that is hooked onto the heel. Tights can also be footless ending at the ankle. Ballet tights are made of nylon, micro fiber, fishnet and other materials. Tights come in a variety of colors, with the most popular being pink and black. Most dance schools require pink, footed tights for girls and black tights and white socks for boys. Brand names include Prima Soft, Danskin, Capezio and Mondor.

Leotards are available in a variety of designs and interesting fabrics like ribbed cotton and velvet. Some of the more popular styles include the double-strap or cross-strap camisoles by Capezio, Leo's Dancewear and Motionwear.

There are no specific brands of shoes that schools require but many encourage that girls wear pink and boys wear black or white for ballet. Popular ballet manufacturers are Sansha, Bloch, Grisko, Capezio and Prima Soft. These companies have popular full-soled and split-soled shoes. Capezio sells leather Romeos, split-sole ballet shoes designed especially for men.

Ballet dancing instructors can be strict about accessories, but most allow short skirts to be worn during variation classes, but only at the instructor's discretion. Some allow skirts that match your leotard, such as the Mirella collection that has skirts color coordinated to their leotard line. Some allow for creativity, and students can opt for the hand-dyed look of Watercolour skirts.

Fun accessories include unique dance bags and warm-ups. A popular style with girls and boys is the rip-stop nylon shoulder or messenger bags with cell-phone cases attached and bowling bags, along with the more traditional athletic bags. Jewelry is generally taboo, but girls are usually allowed to wear stud earrings.

Dance Tights

Among the widely worn tights that serve various purposes, dance tights are a major category. These tights are part of the costumes and practice wear worn by most dancers. Similar to other tights, dance tights are also skin-tight leg coverings that are worn by the performers from waist to feet.

Although tights were a common men's wear during the Renaissance age, they have now turned into a common dress item for all age groups from infants to adults, both men and women. The only difference is that the purpose of each type of tights varies.

Dance tights are of different types including high gloss tights, shimmery tights, opaque firm fit tights, supplex tights and convertible tights. They are available in a wide range of blends as well as colors and sizes suited for all ages.

Dance tights are made of different materials including nylon, lycra, and cotton, but the ones made with a blend of cotton and lycra are the most durable, opaque and thick. These tights are stretchable and comfortable for the dancers to wear. Cotton-lycra dance tights have flat finishes and absorb perspiration.

Dance tights of different material have individual specialty such as nylon-lycra, which offers moderately shiny and stretchable tights, while stretch vinyl dance tights are extremely shiny, heavy and tight fitting. Tights made of micromesh are most often used for stage costumes. The dance tights made of luxury velvet are beautiful and soft to touch.

Dance apparel shops offer dance tights for children, girls, boys, teens, ladies, and men. The online dancewear shops provide a wide range of dance tights for both men and women.

With a little ingenuity, it is not that hard to create a Superman costume out of the materials you have at home. First it is important to get an idea of what you are trying to make. Gather some sources that you can refer to later when you might have a question on what might work best. Overall, from head to toe, you will need a blue long-sleeved shirt, a red and yellow 'S' logo for the front, red underwear, blue pants, red stockings, and a red cape. You might be thinking that some of these things are nowhere to be found in your house. Just take another look around.

A blue shirt shouldn't be too hard to find. It can be a coat, turtle-neck, pajama top...the list is pretty extensive. Don't restrict your thinking to your personal wardrobe either. Don't worry if the shirt doesn't fit exactly because it will mostly going to be covered by the red cape.

Moving onto the logo, this can be made with masking tape, construction paper, computer print out or an iron on patch. Referencing one of your pictures is important to make sure that you have the right colors and pattern to your design. Once this has been fastened to the shirt you can move to the next step.

Pants really should be another easy quest. The same rules apply to the pants as did the shirt. It looks best if they are snug so thermal underwear, your sister's tights, or stretchy pajama bottoms might work well. Cotton is usually the warmest and most comfortable. As for the red underwear and the belt that cover the waist, I would suggest using your own clothing... just a thought.

For the feet, if you have a pair of red boots or shoes, that seems to work best. Red sparkly or slick stockings might work as well, depending on where you will be wearing the costume. A cape can be formed by using a red sheet, towel or blanket. Become resourceful. Anything that is white will work for you as well because the wonderful power of fabric dye can fix just about anything if it is of the right material. Thinking outside the box withholds the key to creating a wonderful Superman costume out of things you already have at home.

Have the winter blahs got you down? Are you ready to add a little zazz to your wardrobe? If so, it's time to lift yourself up and climb aboard the latest trend in hosiery: coloured tights.

That's right. Coloured fashion tights have replaced stockings and pantyhose as the legwear of choice for fashionistas who want to pick up the pace and add some drama to their outfits. The choices are endless, so you can rest assured that you can find fashion tights that you love. Let's look at some options:

Fabrications for Every Occasion

Tights come in a wide variety of fabrications. Merino wool tights, for example, are perfect to keep your legs warm on a chilly winter's day. Pair your wool tights with a short wool dress and a thin belt for a fashion statement that's both stylish and comfortable. Cotton tights have a variety of textures, depending on the manufacturing process. They can feel like velvet and go from work to evening with ease, or can be luxuriously thick to keep your legs protected from icy blasts of wind. Tights made from a blend of denier and lycra have the wonderful smoothness of microfiber with the perfect measure of opacity that makes them an excellent choice for work or for a night on the town.

Colours for Every Mood

When it comes to coloured tights, your choices are limited only by your imagination. From classic black to classy off-white, from chocolate brown to grape purple, from mustard yellow to slate grey, tights come in dozens of colours. In fact, the trend this season is to buy tights in virtually every color available, and use them as a wardrobe accessory. Want to kick that little black dress up a notch? Pair it with red tights and a skinny red belt and watch heads turn. If you're not quite ready for startling contrasts, go with the tone-on-tone look and pair moss green tights with a moss green skirt and sweater. Or choose complementary colors for a put-together look. If you're on the shorter side and want to appear taller, choose lighter coloured tights; if you want to lengthen your torso, opt for darker coloured tights. Whichever way you go, your choices are endless.

Kick Around Some Patterns

This season, the fashion story isn't only about colour - it's also about pattern. Make a funky statement with polka dot tights, red gingham tights, or give your legs a splash of color with a sumptuous pink and blue floral pattern. Want a look that's slightly more subdued by that still makes a statement? Go for tartan or argyle patterned tights.

Of course, there are occasions when you might prefer holdups, thigh highs, a beautiful silk stocking, or even a body stocking, but for the sheer fun of it, you should treat yourself to coloured tights. Winter seems much less dreary when you have some fun with fashion!

What is Dancewear?

There are a range of items commonly worn by dancers and known as dancewear. The types of dancing covered by the term dancewear include ballet, urban dance, and tap dancing. Dancewear items are also worn by other types of performer, such as acrobats, circus performers and some rock musicians. Certain types of dancewear have also become popular as fashion items with the general public.

Ballet shoes, also known as ballet slippers, are well known items of dancewear. Made specifically for the purpose, they are soft to the touch and light in weight and colour. They are in fact a precursor to pointe shoes, which are specially designed to allow the dancer to stand on their toes. Ballet shoes are worn by trainee ballet dancers until their feet and toes are strong enough to allow them to stand 'en pointe' meaning on the tips of their toes. Then they graduate to pointe shoes, which are also known as 'toe shoes'.

Pointe shoes tend to be worn by female dancers for dancing on the tips of their toes. This type of dancing is one of the classic attractions of ballet and demands great skill and strength. While female dancers normally wear pointe shoes, male dancers use this item of dancewear only occasionally, for specific roles.

Tap shoes are worn for tap dancing which is a highly rhythmic and percussive dance form that originated in North America in the nineteenth century. These items of dancewear incorporate small metal plates in their heels and toes. These are used to make rhythmic tapping sounds on the dance floor. So in addition to being dance shoes, tap shoes are musical instruments like castanets or drums that are 'played' by the tap dancer.

Tights are a popular item of dancewear. They are a form of light, tight trouser that fits closely to the body and are made from thin, stretchable material. They are ideal for dancing for many reasons. They accentuate the legs, show the feet, and give freedom of movement. Tights are usually made of nylon, cotton or lycra, or blends of these materials. Tights can be footed, unfooted, or with a stirrup to keep them from rolling up the leg.

Legwarmers are like long footless socks made of wool-type fabric, and are used by dancers to keep their calf muscles warm and so avoid strain injuries to their muscles, ligaments and tendons. This is another item of dancewear that has become a fashion item with the general public.

Leotards are one-piece items of clothing that cover the body but not the legs. Skin-tight and usually worn with tights, leotards can be long-sleeved, short-sleeved, or without sleeves. They were made famous by a French acrobat of the same name who was born in 1839. Leotards are popular dancewear items, used both as practice garments and performance costumes.

Unitards are like leotards and tights combined. They cover the legs and sometimes the arms too. In addition to being a popular item of dancewear, unitards are also worn by rock stars, wrestlers, circus performers, gymnasts and acrobats.

A tutu is a skirt worn by ballerinas for ballet performances. Tutus that stick out horizontally are known as 'pancake' tutus, and need to be carried in a special round bag to keep them in their correct shape. Other types of tutu can hang down, and these can be carried in normal clothes bags. Both pancake tutus and hanging tutus can be made in single or multiple layers.

All of these dancewear items can be bought online, where you can browse the items you are interested in. Whether you are a professional dancer or a student, you will find something to suit your needs and there are many good deals to be found.
